Nuncrackers

by Dan Goggin.

"NUNCRACKERS" opened the Holiday Season in Fremont Centre Theatre's Fifth Anniversary in November 2002. NUNCRACKERS is the Nunsense Christmas musical with the nuns continuing their fund raising efforts from the convent basement as they attempt to put on their own version of The Nutcracker.

"Nuncrackers, in Los Angeles for the first time, is based on Dan Goggin's successful Nunsense series of musicals. Directed by Mary-Pat Green who helped shape the original New York role of the Reverend Mother in Nunsense. "Nuncrackers" continued with the same characters from Nunsense plus Father Virgil (Michael Edwin) and an added chorus of school children aiding and abetting the Reverend Mother (Rende' Rae Norman) in her continuing fund raising ideas and activities. This time it is to be a production of a televised-from-the-convent-basement version of the perennial Holiday favorite, The Nutcracker.

Accompanied by Sister Robert Anne (Rebecca George) and her dashed hopes of having just one night as a Broadway singing star, Sister Hubert (Haneefah Wood), Reverend Mother's side kick who brings her own past to the convent, Sister Amnesia (Leah Mangum) who started her pre-nun career as a Grand ole Opry singer, the Reverend Mother gets a bit more than she bargained for - including the need to keep a watchful eye over Father Virgil who tips an overabundance of rum into the holiday baking.

“Nuncrackers” is a fun-for-the-whole-family holiday musical that strengthens one's belief that everything turns out okay in the end, but, oh brother, what fun it is getting to the end!
